Why does the U.S. give green cards by lottery?
The Green Card Lottery Program (DV Program) was enacted by then President George H. W. Bush in 1990 as the Immigration Act of 1990.
This program was created to address the imbalance in immigration due to the concentration of immigrants from certain countries in the United States in the past, and to diversify immigration, 50,000 green cards (U.S. permanent residency) are issued annually by lottery to countries with relatively few immigrants.
Therefore, people born in countries such as Mexico, the United Kingdom, China, Korea, and India, where the U.S. already has a large number of immigrants, are not eligible to apply.
Diversity” is now a common word in Japan, but DV-1995 was the first DV program. It has been in existence for more than 25 years, and it is a flexible program that is typical of the United States, a country of freedom and immigration.
For those born in Japan, the eligibility requirements are simple, and the procedures for obtaining a green card and maintaining it afterwards are much simpler and less expensive than those for other immigrant visa categories. This is a program that you should definitely apply for every year as long as there is a lottery.
If you understand Japanese, you can apply through Green Card Japan. Every year, one out of every six people born in Japan are selected through Green Card JP!
